Unsent Letter to Joe, my brother
Joe,

I know you don't like thinking about the past. I don't want to hurt you in any way.

I want you to know that I love you, that I've looked up to you, and that I've always wanted a better relationship with you. I am proud of the work you've done in making your life better. Every year you seem stronger, more grounded, and more comfortable in your own skin. I can't tell you how happy that makes me. You are handsome, you have a terrific sense of humor, and you have many gifts. I have always envied your charm, your physical abilities, and your ability to have so many friends.

I have many good memories of us together. I remember you sneaking me out of summer camp so we could ride around the park on the tram. I remember us spending afternoons riding the subway system for fun in the summer. I remember you driving me around in your car, going nowhere, sometimes getting ice cream along the way. I remember rough-housing, tickle fights, and playing in the pool.

I am proud of you for surviving. I am proud of you for turning your life around. I am most proud of the terrific father I see you being to your son.

Thank you for being my brother, and for not disowning me even though I'm certifiably crazy (like that's anything new in our family... but still...).
